The City of Worcester is soliciting contractors for the interior coating of the Union Station in Worcester, Massachusetts. This project is estimated to cover 1,250 square feet of the historic railroad station, which was built in 1911.
Bids for this project are due Feb. 21.
Scope of Work
The project will require the cleaning—either by water solution mixture and/or hand and power tool cleaning—and coating of interior surfaces including, but not limited to walls, ceilings and woodwork of Union Station. Because the train station is protected by the National Register of Historical Places, colors for all surfaces to be coated shall match the existing colors and sheens.

The City of Worcester is soliciting contractors for the interior coating of the Union Station in Worcester, Massachusetts. This project is estimated to cover 1,250 square feet of the historic railroad station, which was built in 1911.

Draw-down samples and mock-up application for each will be required for approval before the coating process is to begin.
The awarded contractor will make sure that once interior wood surfaces are sanded where necessary, clean and dry, they receive proper priming and coating applications. These applications will involve one coat of an extreme bond primer and two coats of an industrial water-based alkyd urethane enamel gloss and industrial water-based alkyd urethane enamel semi-gloss. As specified wooden doors, trim and chair rails are to be cleaned and stained.
All interior walls and ceilings will be cleaned with a water-based solution and have any present mildew removed. As for previously painted surfaces, if any lead is found while cleaning, the contractor is expected to notify the project’s architect immediately. Once all walls and ceiling surfaces have been properly prepared for coating applications, one coat of a latex primer will be applied. After this application, specified surfaces will receive both one coat of an acrylic coating system and one coat of a microbicidal application, or two coats of a microbicidal coating application.
The architect’s specification is based upon Sherwin-Williams coating systems, though other approved brands include Benjamin Moore and California Paints.
Past Renovations
In 1974, the Union Station lost its passenger service and was acquired by Worcester Redevelopment Company. The company then hired Finegold Alexader Architects of Boston to repair and renovate the station for $32 million and reopened to the public in 2000. Since then, the station has received two additional renovations; one $5.2 million project in 2006 for a bus terminal addition and a $14 million project for a new regional transit hub in 2012.
